Tai Chi Classes

Tai Chi for Mind and Body Balance

My Name is Jane Wright and I will be teaching Tai Chi in the Pavilion again this summer!

Wednesday mornings:
Tai Chi Part 1: 9:30am – 10:30am
Tai Chi Part 2: 10:45am – 11:45 am

Mind and body balance can be achieved with regular practice of Tai Chi.  “Meditation to movement” describes this ancient Chinese martial arts practice developed to promote health integration of mind and body.  Essential Tai Chi principles include postural awareness, slow fluid movement patterns, breathing control, and mental concentration. Improved flexibility, strength, balance, fitness, and overall wellbeing are some of the benefits of Tai Chi.  Scientific research shows that daily practice of Tai Chi can improve one’s overall health and function.

I will be teaching Dr. Paul Lam’s “Tai Chi for Arthritis”.  We will learn, practice, and enjoy this sequence.  If you participated last summer, you completed “Part One”.  “Part Two” is a continuation of this sequence.

9:30 am: Tai Chi Part One: This style includes a high stance with agile back and forth footwork/stepping.  It includes a powerful form of Qigong (breathing exercise) that promotes stress reduction and healing. This class is gentle on your knees, promotes core strengthening, and improves balance.  You will learn a warm-up routine and the Basic Movements (Forms 1-9).

10:45 am: Tai Chi Part Two: This class is a continuation of Part One. You will master the Advanced Movements to both sides to complete the Tai Chi for Arthritis sequence (Forms 1-21). These movements will further challenge your balance and lead to greater depth of your Tai Chi practice.  The benefits are many for your mind and body!

Exercise and specifically Tai Chi have been key to my continued health, wellbeing, and happiness.  I am looking forward to sharing Tai Chi with you!   -Jane

Class Descriptions
In both classes you will learn and practice the basic Tai Chi principles.  These include slow fluid movement patterns, breathing control, mental concentration, and integration of mind and body.

In each class you will learn a “sequence”. Each week we will learn one to two new forms. It will take eight weeks to learn all the forms that compose a Tai Chi sequence. Therefore, it is important to make a commitment to attend the entire 8 weeks.
